Scottish exports rise in EU but fall in Asia

The latest figures detailing Scotland’s exports from 2009/2010 show developments and setbacks as sales increased in the EU and North America but plummeted in Asia.

The country’s chief statistician has released the 2010 Global Connections Survey, which shows food and drink accounted for £4 billion of its £22 billion international export market, however this figure does not account for gas and oil.

Whiskey alone made up £3.3 billion of the food and drink income.

Overall exports increased by £355 million from 2009/2010, with the manufacturing sector bringing in the most cash at over £13 billion.

Other successful exports included chemicals (£3 billion) and business services (£2.5 billion).

Scotland’s top international export destination was the USA, followed by the Netherlands, France, Germany and Belgium. Figures indicate £10 billion of all Scottish exports were for EU use.

But in 2009/2010 exports to Asia decreased by £330 million.
