Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA has signed deals to buy more than 200 planes from Airbus and Boeing, claiming it is the largest aircraft purchase undertaken in Europe.
The budget airline is buying 122 Boeing 737s and 100 Airbus A320s in deals worth 127 billion kronor (£13.8 billion) as part of its plans to offer cheaper fares.
Chief executive of Norwegian Air Shuttle, Bjoern Kjos, said the signing of the deals brought an “historic day” for the airline. It is thought the purchases could involve the work of a translation service at some point.
Delivery of the fuel-efficient planes is due to begin in 2016.
Kjos added: “We have secured our fleet renewal for years to come and are very pleased with the agreements with both Airbus and Boeing.”
Meanwhile, the firm is also planning to expand into long-haul flights with departures to New York and Bangkok already scheduled for the start of next year.
